September is Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month!
Every day, 43 children are told they have cancer in the United States. That’s over 15,000 families affected every single year. 1 out of 5 of these children will not survive. Every year in the United States, 1000 children are born with sickle cell disease. There are currently over 100,000 Americans living with this disease. In the pediatric world, cancer and sickle cell disease are treated by the same physician.
The objective of Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness month is to put a direct spotlight on both pediatric cancer and sickle cell disease. Its purpose is to raise awareness for the children and families affected, the obstacles faced with survivorship and bereavement, and to raise funds to continue to support all those in need.
Every day during the month of September, The Children’s Cancer Center will feature the tale of one of the 1,000+ families we serve. We hope that you join us in supporting these families; your donation will allow us to continue to provide immediate support.
$25 will provide the opportunity for a child on active treatment and their family to attend an Oncology Family Connection Group night.
$100 will contribute toward the CCC’s Fueling Families Program which provides gas and grocery gift cards to lighten financial burdens.
$250 will provide the opportunity for a teenager on active treatment to attend the CCC’s Teen Group Support Program for 1 year.
$1,000 will provide the financial assistance needed for a child supported by the CCC to attend Summer Camp for a week.
Children’s Cancer Center’s Mission:
The Children’s Cancer Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families of children who are battling cancer or chronic blood disorders with emotional, financial, and educational support necessary to cope with their life-threatening illness.
History:
The Children’s Cancer Center was founded in 1974. Mac and Cecile Burnett, who lost their daughter, Helen to leukemia, and Dr. Janifer M. Judisch, envisioned an organization that would help alleviate the stress of coping with a child’s life-threatening disease. The philosophy of our original founders is that kids need more than medicine to be well and that when a child is diagnosed, the entire family is essentially diagnosed. Therefore, our programs and services address the immediate everyday needs for the child, along with the needs of all family members affected. With more than 24 programs and services currently helping 1,000+ families, and 45 years of existence and stewardship, it is evident that the Children’s Cancer Center is a crucial organization to so many families.
